What you’ll learn in lesson one

Your first salsa lesson is about one thing — dancing to a real song by the end of the lesson. We teach LA-style salsa, danced “on 1” — the style you’ll see on most floors in Los Angeles — and we start from zero, so no experience is assumed.

• The basic, on 1. Three steps, a pause, three steps, a pause: forward on 1-2-3, back on 5-6-7. We slow it right down until your weight changes feel automatic, then bring the tempo back up.
• Timing. Salsa music is counted in eights. You’ll learn to find the 1 in the music — usually where the melody and the bass land together — so you start on time and stay there when the song speeds up.
• The cross-body lead. The signature move of LA style: the lead opens a lane, the follow travels across it, and you both finish facing each other again. It is the building block for almost every combination you’ll learn later.
• The right turn. Preparation, the turn itself, and a clean finish on 8 — plus how to spot so you don’t get dizzy. Leads learn to signal it with the hand, follows learn to feel it.
• Putting it together. We link the basic, the cross-body lead and the turn into a short combination and dance it to two or three songs, so you leave with something you can use.

From lesson two on, the plan follows your goal: more turn patterns for socials, shines and styling, a routine for a party, or the foundations for a wedding first dance. Every lesson plan is designed by Avissh Trivedi, who has taught ballroom and Latin dance since 2012.

Why LA style, and why private?

LA style is linear — partners dance along a line, or “slot” — with a clear, readable lead, which makes it the easiest style for beginners to hear and to follow at a club. Learning it privately means nobody is watching, nothing is rushed and every step is broken down until it clicks. You get one-on-one feedback for the whole lesson, where a group class would give you a few minutes.

Wherever suits you. Your instructor comes to your home, backyard, office or event venue anywhere in greater Los Angeles and brings the music and the plan — a living room with the coffee table pushed aside is plenty of floor. Love slower, smoother music? We also teach kizomba, the close-embrace dance from Angola, in the same private format and at the same price.
