Lessons are taught by Avissh or an instructor he personally trained.

What is kizomba?

Kizomba is a partner dance and music style that took shape in Angola in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It grew out of semba, an older and faster Angolan dance, and its music softened under the influence of zouk from the French Caribbean. The name comes from Kimbundu, one of Angola’s languages, and means a party. Today it is danced at socials worldwide: slow, grounded and improvised, with most of the conversation happening through the embrace rather than big moves.

What you’ll learn in lesson one

Kizomba looks simple and feels deep. We start from zero, so no experience is assumed, and we keep the hold as close or as open as you want it.

  • The walking basic. Small, grounded steps that land on the beat, with your weight fully transferred each time. A clean walk is the whole dance.
  • Weight changes and pauses. Shifting your weight in place, and pausing on purpose. Pauses are part of kizomba’s musicality, not a mistake.
  • The embrace. How to hold a relaxed frame, chest to chest or with more space, and how much contact is up to you. Close connection is a technique, and you can always ask for more room.
  • Leading and following through the body. In kizomba, signals travel through the torso, not just the hands. Leads learn to be clear and gentle; follows learn to wait and listen.
  • Your first patterns. A side step, a simple turn and a basic exit, so you can dance a full slow song by the end of the hour.

From lesson two on, the plan follows you: more patterns for socials, musicality, semba-flavored footwork or the more upright urban kiz style, or a slow, close routine for a wedding first dance. Every lesson plan is designed by Avissh Trivedi, who has taught ballroom and Latin dance since 2012.

Why learn kizomba privately?

Kizomba is the closest hold in Latin social dancing, and a lot of beginners feel self-conscious learning it in a crowded room with strangers. A private lesson takes the audience away: you set the pace and the songs, you decide how close the embrace gets, and you get feedback for the full hour on the small things that make kizomba feel good, like soft knees, a relaxed chest and clear, patient signals.

Kizomba, semba and urban kiz: which one do we teach?

We start everyone with kizomba fundamentals: the walk, the embrace and timing. They carry into every style. Semba is kizomba’s faster, more playful Angolan parent. Urban kiz is a newer style from the international scene, with straighter lines, a more upright posture and more space between partners. Once your basics are solid, tell us where you want to dance and we’ll steer your lessons toward it.

Where lessons happen

Wherever you’re comfortable. Your instructor comes to your home, backyard, office or venue anywhere in greater Los Angeles, with the music and the plan — kizomba needs almost no space, so a cleared living room is perfect. Want mirrors and a proper floor? We meet you at one of our hourly partner studios in North Hollywood or San Gabriel. We teach every week in Burbank, Toluca Lake, North Hollywood and across the San Gabriel Valley — Pasadena, Alhambra and Arcadia. See where we teach.

Who it’s for

  • Complete beginners. Kizomba is slow enough to learn from zero.
  • Couples who want a slow, close dance to share at home and on date nights.
  • Salsa and bachata dancers adding kizomba for socials and festivals.
  • Solo dancers. Your instructor partners with you, lead or follow.
  • Wedding couples who want a close, slow first dance that still looks choreographed.

Lead, follow or switch — your dance, your call. The embrace is always as close or as open as you want it to be.

Questions

Good to know.

How much are kizomba lessons in Los Angeles?

Private kizomba lessons with Salsa Dance LA are $150 per 60-minute lesson, solo or with a partner at the same price. Nothing is charged until we confirm your lesson.

Do I need a partner or any experience?

No. Most students start with no dance background, and if you come alone your instructor partners with you as lead or follow.

Is kizomba hard to learn?

The steps are small and slow, so most beginners can dance a simple full song in their first lesson. What takes longer is the connection, which is exactly what private lessons focus on.

Is kizomba the same as bachata?

No. Both are close partner dances, but bachata comes from the Dominican Republic and uses a three-steps-and-a-tap basic, while kizomba comes from Angola and is built on a smooth walk with pauses. Many dancers learn both.

How close is the embrace?

As close as you’re comfortable with. Kizomba is often danced in a close hold, but the amount of contact is always your choice, and we teach an open hold too.

Where do the lessons happen?

At your home, venue or event anywhere in greater Los Angeles, or at a partner studio in North Hollywood or San Gabriel.

Can we learn kizomba for our wedding first dance?

Yes. Kizomba’s slow, close style makes a beautiful first dance. See our wedding dance lessons for packages, or start with a single private lesson.
