Bachata Lessons in Los Angeles — Private, From $150

What you’ll learn in lesson one

Bachata is the most welcoming partner dance there is: slow enough to think, close enough to feel, and simple enough that most people are dancing to a full song in their first lesson. We start from zero, so no experience is assumed.

• The basic. Three steps and a tap — 1-2-3-tap, 5-6-7-tap — side to side. We work on small steps, soft knees and landing each step on the beat, because a clean basic is what makes everything else look good.
• The side step and forward-and-back. Two variations of the basic that let you move around the floor and change direction with your partner without losing the rhythm.
• Hip motion, without forcing it. The famous bachata hips come from the steps: bend the knee, transfer your weight fully, and the hips follow on their own. You won’t be asked to “shake” anything — the movement grows as you relax.
• The simple turn. A single turn for the follow (and how the lead signals and catches it), finishing back in hold on the tap.
• Connection. How to hold your frame in open and close position, how a lead communicates through the hands and the back, and how a follow listens — always at the level of closeness you’re comfortable with.

From lesson two on, the plan follows you: more turns and combinations for socials, body movement and styling, sensual bachata foundations, or a routine for a party or a wedding first dance. Every lesson plan is designed by Avissh Trivedi, who has taught ballroom and Latin dance since 2012.

Why learn bachata privately?

Bachata is a close-hold dance, and a lot of beginners feel self-conscious in a crowded class. A private lesson takes the audience away: you set the pace, you choose the songs, and you decide how close the hold gets. You also get personal feedback for the whole lesson on the details that matter most in bachata — soft steps, a relaxed frame and clear signals — instead of a few minutes in a group rotation.

Where lessons happen

Wherever you’re comfortable. Your instructor comes to your home, backyard, office or venue anywhere in greater Los Angeles, with the music and the plan — bachata needs very little space, so a cleared living room is perfect.
